It all began with a minor sensation: in the bidding war for the film rights to
the international best-seller Shanghai Baby, a German film producer prevailed
over mighty international competitors. It is not Hollywood, but the renowned
Berengar Pfahl GmbH production company that will bring the controversial
novel to the screen. Author Wei Hui, breakout star of the international literary
scene, reports: "There was a real free-for-all for the book. But Berengar
Pfahl Film was the one firm that already had a footing in China through its
cooperation with the Shanghai Media Group, and thus an expertise that other
competitors did not have." Not only Wei Hui, who co-authored the script, was
convinced by the concept and competence of Berengar Pfahl Film; international
screen star Bai Ling ("Dumplings," "Red Corner," "Anna and the King") signed
on for the lead role. The film will be shot from September to end October
in Berlin, Shanghai and the south of China.
"It's a film," says Berengar Pfahl, "that shows a modern-day Shanghai with
all of its disorienting facets, and that provides new insights into China instead
of hackneyed clichés."
